How to Switch from a Microsoft Account to a Local Account in Windows 11

Windows 11 strongly encourages you to sign in with a Microsoft account, and during setup it is difficult to avoid. But using a local account is a valid choice — it means Windows works without an internet connection, no data is synced to Microsoft’s servers, and you are not tied to an email address for your PC login. Here is how to switch.

What Is the Difference Between a Microsoft Account and a Local Account?

  • Microsoft account: Linked to your @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, or work email. Settings, passwords, and files sync across devices via OneDrive and Microsoft servers. Password can be reset online.
  • Local account: Exists only on this PC. Nothing syncs automatically. You need a USB recovery drive or security questions to reset the password. No Microsoft account required.

How to Switch to a Local Account

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings
  2. Go to Accounts > Your info
  3. Click Sign in with a local account instead
  4. Windows will warn you about features you will lose (OneDrive sync, Microsoft Store purchases, etc.) — click Next
  5. Enter your current Microsoft account password to confirm
  6. Choose a username, password, and password hint for your new local account
  7. Click Next, then Sign out and finish

Your PC will sign you out and back in with the local account. Your files remain exactly where they were.

What You Lose When Switching to a Local Account

  • OneDrive auto-sync — files you have saved to OneDrive will still be accessible but will not auto-sync. You can still use OneDrive manually.
  • Microsoft Store apps — apps you purchased will still work but you cannot download new ones without signing in to a Microsoft account
  • Password reset via email — if you forget your local account password, you cannot reset it online; you will need security questions
  • Settings sync — preferences like browser favourites and wallpaper will no longer sync across your devices

What Stays the Same

  • All your files and documents
  • All installed apps and programs
  • Your desktop, taskbar, and Windows settings
  • Microsoft 365 (Office) — you sign in to that separately

How to Switch Back to a Microsoft Account

If you change your mind:

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info
  2. Click Sign in with a Microsoft account instead
  3. Enter your Microsoft account credentials

Setting Up Security Questions for Your Local Account

After switching to a local account, set up security questions as a recovery option in case you forget your password:

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options
  2. Scroll down to Password
  3. Click Update and follow the prompts to set security questions
