How to Use Zoom Backgrounds (Virtual and Blurred)

Zoom virtual backgrounds let you replace or blur what is behind you on a video call — useful when you are working from a messy room, a noisy cafe, or simply want a cleaner, more professional appearance. Here is how to set them up.

How to Enable a Virtual Background in Zoom

  1. Open Zoom and click the gear icon to open Settings
  2. Click Backgrounds & Effects on the left
  3. Under Virtual Backgrounds, choose one of Zoom’s built-in backgrounds — or click the + icon to upload your own image or video
  4. Click on a background to apply it — you will see the preview update immediately

You can also change your background during a meeting by clicking the ^ arrow next to the Stop Video button and selecting Choose Virtual Background.

How to Blur Your Background

Background blur is the most popular option for professional use — it softens what is behind you without replacing it entirely:

  1. Go to Settings > Backgrounds & Effects
  2. Click on Blur

The blur effect works on most modern PCs and Macs without any additional hardware. You do not need a green screen.

Do You Need a Green Screen?

No. Zoom uses AI to detect the boundary between you and your background, so virtual backgrounds work without a green screen on most machines. However, a physical green screen significantly improves the edge detection — your outline will be cleaner and the background replacement more convincing. If you frequently use virtual backgrounds on video calls, a green screen is a low-cost way to make a noticeable difference.

Virtual Background Not Available?

If you cannot find the Virtual Backgrounds option, your computer may not meet the minimum requirements. Zoom requires:

  • A reasonably modern processor (Intel i5/i7 or AMD equivalent from 2016 or later)
  • 4GB RAM minimum (8GB recommended without a green screen)
  • 64-bit operating system

If your machine meets these requirements but the option is missing, update to the latest version of Zoom — the feature was added in version 5.x and some older installations may not have it.

Using a Custom Background Image

You can upload any image as a virtual background:

  1. Go to Settings > Backgrounds & Effects
  2. Click the + icon and select Add Image
  3. Browse to your image and select it

Best results come from images that are 1920×1080 pixels (16:9 aspect ratio) and around 5MB or smaller. Avoid images with a lot of fine detail at the edges — these can look cluttered around your head and shoulders.

Using a Video as a Background

Zoom also supports short looping MP4 videos as backgrounds:

  1. Click the + icon and select Add Video
  2. Choose an MP4 file

Keep video backgrounds subtle — an animated or busy video is distracting in business meetings.

Tips for Better Virtual Backgrounds

  • Good lighting makes a significant difference — face a light source rather than sitting with a window behind you
  • Wear plain clothing — patterns near your background edges confuse the AI detection
  • Avoid fast movements if not using a green screen — the background can take a moment to re-render
