Claude has a free plan that works well for everyday use, and a paid Pro plan that removes limits and unlocks more powerful features. Here’s exactly what each plan includes, who needs to upgrade, and whether the cost is worth it.
Claude Free Plan
The free plan at claude.ai gives you access to Claude Sonnet — one of Anthropic’s most capable models — with no credit card required. You get:
- Access to Claude Sonnet (high-quality, fast model)
- Conversations with a 200K token context window (enough to paste a full novel)
- File uploads — PDFs, documents, images
- Daily usage limits (you’ll hit a “limit reached” message after heavy use)
- Access to Claude.ai on web and mobile
For light to moderate use — a few conversations a day, occasional document analysis, ad-hoc writing help — the free plan is genuinely useful and doesn’t feel restricted most of the time.
Claude Pro Plan (Paid)
Claude Pro costs $20/month (around £16–18/month depending on exchange rate). It adds:
- 5x more usage than the free plan — you’re much less likely to hit limits
- Access to Claude Opus — Anthropic’s most powerful model, better at complex reasoning, detailed analysis and long-form tasks
- Priority access during peak times — less queuing when demand is high
- Early access to new features — including experimental tools and beta features
- Projects — save instructions and context that persist across conversations
Claude Teams Plan (For Businesses)
The Teams plan costs $25 per user per month (minimum 5 users) and is designed for businesses. It adds:
- Higher usage limits than Pro
- Admin controls and user management
- Conversations are not used to train Anthropic’s models (important for business confidentiality)
- Billing and invoicing through a single account
Claude Enterprise
Enterprise is for large organisations needing custom security, SSO, compliance controls, and dedicated support. Pricing is by negotiation. Most small businesses won’t need this.
Free vs Pro — Who Should Upgrade?
Upgrade to Pro if:
- You’re hitting the usage limit regularly during a working day
- You need to process large documents or complex tasks that require Opus-level quality
- You use Claude as a daily work tool rather than occasionally
- You want persistent Projects to save your preferences and context
Stick with free if:
- You use Claude a few times a week rather than daily
- Sonnet quality is sufficient for your tasks (it usually is)
- You’re still evaluating whether Claude fits your workflow
Is Claude Pro Worth It?
At $20/month it’s comparable to ChatGPT Plus. If you use it heavily as a work tool — drafting, research, coding, analysis — it pays for itself quickly. If you’re unsure, start with the free plan for a few weeks and upgrade once you know you’re using it enough to justify it.
Can You Use Claude for Free via the API?
New Anthropic API accounts get a small free credit allowance to test with, but ongoing API usage is pay-per-use rather than a flat subscription. The API is for developers building applications — most users are better served by claude.ai. See our guide to Claude Code if you want to use Claude in your development workflow.
